Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival, River Journey and Night Walk
08:00 am: Morning pick-up in Lago Agrio
The tour begins in Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja). The exact pick-up point depends on how you arrive, whether by shuttle bus, public bus, or private vehicle. If you’re flying, the nearest airport is in Coca. See our transportation guide for more details.
Bus ride, lunch and canoe transfer
We travel by private bus for about two hours to the village of Tierras Orientales, located on the Aguarico River. Here, we enjoy a boxed lunch and prepare for the river journey. From this point, we continue by motorized canoe.
Downriver navigation (approx. 3 hours)
The canoe ride lasts around three hours, taking us to La Bocana, where the Aguarico River meets the Cuyabeno River. This area is rich in wildlife, and we often see birds, monkeys, and sometimes pink river dolphins. Much of the wildlife can be spotted with the naked eye, but binoculars are useful if you have them. We also carry binoculars for shared use.
Arrival at the lodge
We continue upstream along the Cuyabeno River for about 30 minutes until we reach the Amazon lodge. We arrive in the late afternoon, with time to settle in and relax after the journey.
Dinner and night walk
After dinner, the guide gives an introduction to the coming days. Later, we head out for a night walk near the lodge to look for nocturnal wildlife such as insects, spiders, frogs, and tree snakes.
Day 2: Parrot Clay Lick, Peru Border Navigation and Camping
Early morning parrot clay lick
The day starts early with a motorized canoe ride along the Cuyabeno River. This is a great time for wildlife spotting, especially birds. After about 1.5 hours, we reach a parrot clay lick where several species of parrots and parakeets gather to feed on mineral-rich clay.
Breakfast and preparation
We return to the lodge for breakfast and a short rest. Afterward, we prepare our equipment for a longer river journey.
Canoe journey toward the Peru border
By motorized canoe, we travel toward La Bocana again, where white and black water rivers meet. From here, we continue downstream along the Aguarico River toward the Ecuador–Peru border. This section of the journey takes around four hours and passes flooded forest areas with good chances to see dolphins, birds, and other wildlife.
Lagartococha River and Kichwa community visit
We turn upstream into the Lagartococha River, navigating slowly while looking for monkeys, birds, and river dolphins. Along the way, we stop at a Kichwa family farm for a boxed lunch and to collect local products used for our meals.
Camping at Zancudococha
In the afternoon, we arrive at Redondococha, located within the Kichwa community of Zancudococha. We set up camp on raised platforms and settle in for two nights. This area is part of a large blackwater flooded forest, home to many species that depend on these ecosystems.
Dinner and night search
After dinner, the guide shares information about the region before inviting us on a night excursion to look for caimans and other nocturnal animals.
Day 3: Garzacocha Lagoon, Forest Walk and Night Canoe Excursion
Early breakfast and departure
We begin the day early, enjoying breakfast at camp surrounded by jungle sounds. We depart by motorized canoe.
Journey to Garzacocha Lagoon
We travel upstream along the Lagartococha River for approximately three hours to reach Garzacocha, one of the largest lagoons in the Cuyabeno Reserve. Along the way, we may see birds, monkeys, caimans, sloths, and with some luck, capybaras or giant river otters.
Lagoon exploration and jungle walk
Lunch is enjoyed near the lagoon. Afterward, we explore Garzacocha and its blackwater ecosystem, where plants and animals are adapted to seasonal flooding. We also take a short forest walk to experience the area on foot.
Return to camp and sunset
In the late afternoon, we return to camp by canoe, enjoying the sunset along the river. Back at camp, there is time to relax before dinner.
Night canoe excursion
After dark, we head out again by canoe to search for black caimans, tree boas, fishing bats, night birds, and other nocturnal wildlife.
Day 4: Imuya Floating Islands, Narrow Waterways & Sunset Lagoon
Early breakfast
We start the day early with breakfast at camp before heading downstream along the Lagartococha River toward the remote Imuya Lagoon.
Imuya Lagoon exploration
Reaching Imuya is an adventure in itself. We navigate carefully through floating islands of aquatic plants to enter this unique lagoon. The winding rivers are home to bird species specially adapted to life on floating grass islands. Along the way, we may hear macaws overhead and howler monkeys calling from the forest.
Lunch and rest at camp
After slowly making our way back, we’ll enjoy lunch at camp followed by a short rest.
Aguarico River & Iripari creek journey
In the afternoon, we travel by canoe to the mouth of the Lagarto River, with a good chance of spotting pink river dolphins. From there, we head upstream along the Aguarico River toward the Kichwa community of Zancudococha. We then enter the narrow Iripari creek, a 45-minute journey through increasingly intimate rainforest scenery.
Zancudococha Lagoon & sunset
We arrive at the Iripari or Zancudococha Lagoon, one of the largest blackwater lakes in the region, and set up camp for the next two nights. Before dinner, we explore the lagoon by canoe and, if conditions allow, enjoy a beautiful sunset reflected on the still water.
Caiman search and optional night walk
After dinner, we keep watch for black caimans along the lagoon. Depending on time and energy levels, you may also join an optional night walk in the Terra Firme forest.
Day 5: Moretal Flooded Forest, Medicinal Plants & Lagoon Swim
Morning canoe ride in the Moretal
In the early morning, we begin with a quiet canoe ride along the edge of the lagoon, exploring the Moretal flooded forest. Towering morete palms dominate this ecosystem, which supports a wide variety of wildlife.
Breakfast at camp
We return to camp for breakfast after the canoe excursion.
Terra Firme forest walk
Later in the morning, our guide leads a walk through Terra Firme forest, explaining the use of medicinal plants and traditional knowledge passed down through generations of local communities.
Lunch and rest
We return to camp for lunch and some time to relax.
Afternoon exploration and swim
In the afternoon, we head back out to explore more of the lagoon and flooded forest. There’s time to observe new species, enjoy the surroundings, and take a refreshing swim in the lagoon.
Special final dinner at camp
In the evening, we gather for a special final dinner at camp. If time and energy allow, there may be an optional evening activity to close the day.
Day 6: Exclusive River Route, Birdwatching Tower & Night Walk
Early breakfast and departure
After breakfast, we begin our return journey toward the Amazon Lodge. We navigate the Iripari meander by canoe, observing the transition between flooded forest and Terra Firme forest.
Zabalo River expedition
We reconnect with the Aguarico River and travel upstream toward Cofán territory. From there, we take a detour along the remote Zabalo River, a blackwater river located between Kichwa and Cofán lands. This exclusive route offers a rare look at untouched rainforest ecosystems.
Field lunch and return to the lodge
We enjoy a picnic-style lunch along the river before continuing to the lodge, where there’s time to rest.
Birdwatching tower visit
In the late afternoon, we visit the birdwatching tower built around a giant Ceibo tree. Standing 28 meters high, it offers panoramic views of the canopy and excellent opportunities to spot birds and other wildlife.
Night walk and dinner
Before dinner, we take a short night walk near the tower to search for nocturnal insects and forest creatures.
Day 7: Final Canoe Ride and Return Journey
Early morning jungle farewell
On our final morning, we head out early for a short canoe ride or forest walk to experience the rainforest waking up. It’s a peaceful farewell and a last chance to spot wildlife.
Breakfast and packing
After breakfast, we pack our belongings and prepare for the journey back.
Return to Lago Agrio
We travel down the Cuyabeno River for about 30 minutes, then head upstream along the Aguarico River for approximately three hours to reach Tierras Orientales. From there, private transport takes us to Lago Agrio City (Nueva Loja), arriving around 13:00 (1:00 p.m).
Onward travel
You can continue by public bus, tourist shuttle, or private vehicle toward Quito. If you plan to fly from Coca Airport, this must be scheduled for the following day. More details are available in our transportation guide.
