Wildlife Spotting: A Must-Do Activity

The Cuyabeno Reserve offers many opportunities for animal spotting. This remote region is home to an incredible array of wildlife, from colorful birds and exotic monkeys to elusive jaguars and giant anacondas. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at some of the best wildlife spots you can explore during your stay in the Cuyabeno Reserve.

    Laguna Grande

One of the most popular destinations in the Cuyabeno is Laguna Grande, a breathtakingly beautiful lake that is surrounded by dense jungle. It’s the perfect spot for kayaking, swimming, or simply relaxing and enjoying the stunning scenery. The lake is home to an array of aquatic life, including the infamous pink river dolphin. If you’re lucky, you may even spot some caimans or giant otters.

To discover the best of Laguna Grande, you can choose one of our Regular Tours where we head to the Laguna Grande on multiple occassions.

    Terra Firme

For those interested in birdwatching, Terra Firme is the place to be. This is a unique ecosystem that consists of forests that remain dry even during the wet season. The area is home to a diverse range of birds, including the harpy eagle, which is one of the most powerful birds of prey in the world. You’ll also find a variety of monkeys, such as the red howler monkey and the squirrel monkey, as well as a range of reptiles and amphibians.

You can discover the Terra Firme during our Expedition tours. You will discover the unique ecosystem in canoe and on foot.

    Zancudococha

Another stunning wildlife spot in the Cuyabeno Reserve is Zancudococha. This is a narrow creek that runs through the forest and is surrounded by towering trees and dense vegetation. The creek is teeming with wildlife, including many species of fish and birds. You’ll also find a variety of reptiles, such as iguanas and snakes, as well as numerous species of insects.

Zancudacocha is visited during our 7-Day Peru Border Explorer tour. This is because this lake is located in the deep jungle. You will head on a multi-day camping tour through the Amazon rainforest.

     Lagartococha

Finally, we have Lagartococha, a stunning lagoon that is home to a wide range of wildlife. Here, you’ll find caimans, monkeys, and a wide variety of birdlife, including the hoatzin, which is sometimes referred to as the “stinkbird” due to its pungent odor. The lagoon is also surrounded by dense vegetation, making it a great spot for hiking and exploring the rainforest.

You will visit the most remote lake from the Cuyabeno on our 7-Day Peru Border Explorer tour. Lagartococha is close to the border of Peru, so you will venture for multiple days by canoe through the jungle. This is an amazing tour for rainforest lovers and adventurers.
